01-18-01. From Sam Raimi about Ted Raimi's appearance in SPIDER-MAN: "Ted will be taking a small part in the film, that's my brother. My mother made me put him in the picture!"

01-09-01. Roving WHOOSH reporter Chris Clogston logs this in with news with us:

At a group of talks at an archeology conference in San Diego on the weekend of January 6th, 2001, entitled 2001: Science Fiction and Antiquity (how the science fiction genre borrows from and is inspired by classical literature), one of the panelists gave a paper called "Amazons in Plato's Republic: The Western Classical Tradition of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's Herland". Her premise was that Herland's community of Amazons is taken directly from Plato's Republic. OK, whatever. But she she launched into a side discourse which was a list of socially negative aspects (in the eyes of Greek male society) of Amazon culture, focusing on the aspect of Rejected Motherhood and how it was portrayed in the movie Jurassic Park (female, supposedly neutered dinosaurs find a way to reproduce without males and then attack the nuclear family). Why the speaker went to Jurassic Park we'll never know. But a man in the audience stood up and said that he didn't agree with anything she said, that her arguments did not support her opening thesis, and she should have included POSITIVE examples of Amazon culture such as seen on XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS! Yeah! But here response was wankish: she thought that no one watched XWP as a source of positive role models for women and she didn't think that Xena even qualified as an Amazon. She used the phrase "Xena is Amazon-Light". I said in a not very quiet voice, "You've obviously never watched the show!", everyone stared at me and the panelist ran out of time. Xenites would have run her out of town. BTW, the best talk in this section was "Predestination in Greek Literature and the Terminator Films.

01-09-01. Kevin "Hercules" Sorbo will appear on an upcoming episode of ABC's DHARMA & GREG, playing a college professor who tutors Dharma.
