06/21/02. Shoot-out Online. A free film course is offered on the Internet at http://webevents.broadcast.com/mandalay/shootoutonline/. It's only 9 lessons and it is free! free! free! This course is not about "how to" make films. It's a narrative about "how come" films get made - and sometimes, frighteningly, why.

Hollywood luminaries Peter Bart and Peter Guber share from personal experiences that collectively encompass over 65 years of filmmaking expertise. They explore the personalities and parables of the entertainment machine and in the process expose the brilliance, insanity, and humor that are part and parcel of the motion picture industry.

In every creative endeavor there is one seminal element: the idea. The idea invariably defines the process, shape and tone - often even the very existence - of the project. Among collaborators there are moments when key participants struggle for power over the idea. This conflict may be as naked and bold as being thrown off the film. Or it can be as subtle as being ignored in a key meeting. But what is it that determines the outcome of these struggles - and our own joy or pain? It is the elegance with which we deploy our weapons or the grace with which we fall.

And what is the height of elegance? It's never having to shoot, but not having others doubt your ability or willingness to do so.

Over the course of nine lessons Shoot Out will take you from the height of elegance, to the valley of ego, prepare for an entirely new perspective on the business and art of the cinema.

The syllabus can be downloaded at the website.

02-16-01. It is with great sadness that we report that Kevin Smith died in Beijing, China on February 15, 2002. We offer our deepest condolences to his family. Many on the Whoosh staff had personally met and interacted with Mr. Smith, and a few counted themselves as his friends. Smith had an authentic charisma about him. He was a kind soul and meant well, and most people in his presence could feel it. Many actors and people in "people" businesses cultivate that type of persona, but what really unarmed you was that after a while you realized it was not just a facade with Smith, it actually was him. His sincerity usually went off the scales and left a most strong and lasting impression. It was deeply genuine and stood out in a world of surface actions and shallow emotions. I have met few people in my time with that type of honest and refreshing aura.

02-12-01. Kevin "Ares" Smith injured in China while on an acting gig. As reported by a New Zealand website (http://www.stuff.co.nz/inl/index/0,1008,1101624a11,FF.html):
