COMMENTARY:

This commentary is by Kent Simmons.

This episode may not have been a dark and emotional one but it was enjoyable and something worth watching. It did get a little too silly in the end but it was fun to watch and its great to see Salmoneus again. He appears so little now that it was great to see a sidekicks episode. I actually like most sidekick episodes, the ones with just Iolaus, and the ones with Auto and Sal. I didn't mind them using Falafal as a major character, or semi-major, since he hasn't appeared since season three's "The End of the Beginning."

This episode had some funny lines and momments. The genie was a decent villan, although I thought the ending with everyone trapped inside the lamp was a little dull. The shepard was a weird lad. He did provide some laughs with his "bah" to Sal and Auto. The fighting scenes were good. Autolycus is becoming better each time and Sal's starting to get more involved as well. I hope they use Salmoneus more this season. He's a good character and can be used in darker episodes too. Just watch "Outcast", "Gauntlet", "Under a Broken Sky", "Centaur Mentor Journey," and "As Darkness Falls." You can also watch XWP's "The Greater Good" to see my point proven right.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Auto and Sals interaction. Bruce and Rob work well together.

  • The double Sal's.

  • Auto calling himself the "Sultan of Swat."

  • The shepars "bah'ing" at Auto and Sal.

  • Auto and Sal meeting in the sultans treasure room.

  • Cry baby Sal moving back and forth on the bench while drinking the coffee.
  • THINGS

  • The music used during the fight between Auto and the Sultan was also used last season on XWP during "Vanishing Act." That episode also had an arabian flare to it.

  • Recall that painting of Worholecles? It was used in "If I Had a Hammer." Looks like Sal finally got a stable job as the manager of those artists. They also used the Eye of Herc painting.

  • I don't regognize the set but I recall it from a past episode. It was either used in "Porkules" or "If I Had a Hammer."
  • I really cannot say more since theres not much to review. I did enjoy this one and may go rewatch it now. It wasn't as good as "Faith" or "Resurrection" but it was good in it's own way and didn't dissapoint me one bit. I just hope we see sal again this season and tagging alongside Hercules.

    TALES OF THE HERCAVERSE

12-31-98a. From Kent Simmons. It was talked about on AmAzOnS Bruce Campbell Forum that Auto may have killed the Sultan by letting him fall in the hole. The problem from the few fans were that Auto wasn't a killer and his motives have normally been to be more of a lover and not a fighter, unless he needed to fight to defend himself or if he needed to make an escape and has to fight things in his way. They think the writer should have made it better known what took place and if the Sultan died or not. I kindof agree although it really doesn't matter.

12-31-98a. From Kent Simmons. Herk was missing because Kevin Sorbo got the filming off. They do show a clip of Herc, from some other episode, during the 30 second teaser.

10-11-98. Originally set to air 11/16/98, and then moved to early 1999, then moved back to 11/16, GENIE has now been bumped up to 10/19/98. Why? The scuttlebutt is that TPTB decided to move RENDER UNTO CAESAR up a week so it would run with XENA's A GOOD DAY, another Caesar episode. Thus, beginning the cut-throat November sweepstakes (which X & H definitely need some ratings uppage), XENA and HERK throw at us one of the best villains in XENA, Caesar, Julius Caesar. And because RENDER kicks off another multipart trip for Hercules, they took the next episode which had nothing to do with anything (GENIES), and slapped it in the 10/16th slot. One of the things that I most admired about this HERK season was the way they were starting the season on an intense and compelling multistory arc, beginning with Iolaus' death, Herk's crisis of faith, Herk's travels, Herk's meeting of Morrigan, his reunion with Iolaus, his relationship with Morrigan changing (the story they should have done with Xena, but then, had they, there would have not been any XWP), Herk's renewal of faith, and then the comedies. But by wanting the Caesar episodes to be together, HERK is walking on shakey ground like XWP did in its third season, which punctuated an extrememly intense and complex dramatic storyline with totally inane comedies. However, it looks like Herk and Iolaus will be for the most part absent from GENIES so perhaps HERK will not fall into this dangerous trap of alienating their core audience by having the focus of critical change going through a silly and pointless farce and romp.

08-21-98. Salmoneus has been written into two HERCULES episodes, and one XENA. Robert Trebor will return to play the part. In the XENA episode, Salmoneus and Joxer finally meet. In HERCULES' GENIES, GRECIANS' AND GREEKS, Trebor plays THREE different Salmoni as the result of a wayward wish to a genie. Autolycus joins him in his hi-jinks. Is this plethora of look-a-likes a way to save money on actors???? Robert Trebor will also reprise his role as a studio suit in FOR THOSE OF YOU JUST JOINING US, and will direct a HERCULES episode as well. That makes his contribution a total of 5 episodes. Way to go, Bob.

07-29-98. Robert Trebor just got back from New Zealand where he filmed the HERK episode, GENIES AND GRECIANS AND GEEKS, OH MY! The episode is directed by Bruce Campbell and it involves three nude dancing Salmoneuses...just kidding, I hope. It does feature a genie and three Salmoneuses, but I have no idea how clothed they are. Robert Trebor had a chance to visit a bit at the Southern California XenaFest IV on July 25, 1998 where he mingled with fans and offered an item for the auction. Next thing I knew, he was off to Europe to appear at a convention. GENIES is scheduled to air 11/16/98.
