PRESS RELEASE

Derek Lloyd, a shadowy government agent who tricked Sydney and Nigel into a mission once before, lures Syd to New Guinea by kidnapping Nigel. The relic-hunting twosome don't believe that the enigmatic spy is on a goodwill mission, but are seduced by the possibility of rediscovering a lost civilization, the Kai Nomata, an ancient tribe believed to have been destroyed by a volcano thousands of years ago. As is par for the course with Lloyd, when the need-to-know details are finally revealed, Syd and Nigel don't know what - or who - to believe.

COMMENTARY

This commentary is by Beboman.

This was a good episode which I enjoyed a great deal. It kept my interest for the whole hour. It had some really great comedic moments and it kept the tension quite a bit during the whole episode.

I enjoyed the intrigue that the character of Derek Lloyd brought to the show. We did not really have an idea what he was up to, but we knew he was up to no good.

I also enjoyed the whole notion of finding a civilization out there that might not have been touched by this modern world. I realize there are places in the Amazon that might still be a bit on the wild side, but I find the idea that there might still be a tribe of indigenous people untouched by civilization a bit bizarre.

Sydney showed in this episode that she definitely can think on her feet, that she is able to find a way to make things work for her and that, no matter what, she will try to keep those with her safe during the process.

The idea that Derek had to kidnap Nigel and use him to lure Sydney into helping him find the lost tribe of Kai Nomata was not a bad idea. Then after getting Sydney to New Guinea, he tried to convince her that all this work was for archaeological interest; still not a bad idea. But keeping from Sydney the fact that his true mission was to retrieve Quelch, a government operative gone bad who had taken over the tribe, was really not a good idea. One thing Sydney really hates is to be taken for a ride.

I have come to the conclusion that Sydney is an adrenaline junky. She will go anywhere in the world for the pleasure of finding a relic and getting some excitement in the process. I think the only reason she teaches is the excitement of telling her students some of her stories.

The way Sydney solved the problem in this episode was just great. She used her little crossbow to free herself and her friends from where they were held (have I ever mentioned how much I like that little crossbow) and in the process, she figured out how to use Quelch's own tactic to help her get an advantage over Quelch. By doing this, Sydney gave Mudo a fighting chance to take control of his tribe. Not bad for a day's work.

Every time I watch one of the episodes, I am just more amused by the relationship between Sydney and Claudia. They are friends and coworkers in a very strange way. Sydney needs Claudia to keep things running at the college and Claudia needs Sydney as a source of stability and support.

Loved the fight scenes in this show; not bad at all, especially the ones between Derek and Sydney. Those were just great. Once again, I have to say that Sydney can really punch her entrance into almost any situation.

Another entertaining episode. I just hope they can continue to deliver this type of episode for a long time.
