An Index To Nikki Stafford's Lucy Lawless And Renee O'Connor: Warrior Stars Of Xena

Special kaleidoscope collector's cover!

The cover of WARRIOR STARS.

Introduction

[1] The battle of the books has begun. In his Xena: Warrior Princess: The Official Guide To The XenaVerse (1998), Robert Weisbrot says that Lucy Lawless is 5'11". In her Lucy Lawless And Renee O'Connor: Warrior Stars Of Xena (ECW Press, 1998, 350 p., $16.95, ISBN 155022347X), Nikki Stafford says she is 5'10".

[2] In the introduction to my index to Weisbrot's book (Whoosh! issue 22), I wrote Weisbrot's was "the most valuable book to date about Xena". In fact, both Weisbrot and Stafford are excellent and which you prefer depends on what kind of information you need. Weisbrot describes the Xena: Warrior Princess (XWP) production process. Stafford concentrates on the stars (as her title indicates) and on fan activities. Both provide credits and commentaries for episodes: Weisbrot through A COMEDY OF EROS (46/222) at the end of the second season, and Stafford through THE BITTER SUITE (58/312) at the end of the overt rift episodes.

[3] The episode synopses in both books are very brief. Stafford's commentaries on individual episodes are much longer than Weisbrot's, with the most detailed examination I have seen of the mythological sources of the series and how the writers altered the genuine myths. Readers of Stafford will be surprised to learn that even Callisto, Salmoneus, Autolycus, and Meleager are based very loosely on characters in real myths (or at least share the same names).

[4] As in my Weisbrot index, I have not indexed every name found in the book, but I hope I have provided access to the names and concepts of most interest to fans. I have made double entries for Callisto and Ares, for Stafford's discussions of each of them as a mythological figure and as an XWP character.

[5] Nikki Stafford informed me that due to the length of her manuscript the publishers removed the results of an online questionnaire she sent to fans. The fan responses can be found on Mary Draganis's web site.

[6] This index concludes (for now) my project of indexing useful, unindexed Xena books. Two other books, James Van Hise's Hercules & Xena: The Unofficial Companion (1998) and Nadine Crenshaw's Xena X-Posed (1997), seem to me not worth indexing. (Yet, Van Hise's effort is the only one of the four Xena books published with its own index!) I hope all future worthwhile Xena books will be indexed by their publishers.

Corrections

[7] Nikki Stafford has asked me to include here two corrections to her book. First, in her trivia questions, on p. 207 under "episode events", question 12 should be "Name the two episodes that sent a baby down the stream", not "three episodes".

[8] Second, in her discussion of KING OF ASSASSINS (54/308), she wrote (p. 329) that Cleopatra's brother Ptolmey XIII lost a civil war to Cleopatra and Caesar and later accompanied Cleopatra on her famous visit to Caesar in Rome. In fact, Ptolmey XIII died conveniently just as he lost the war against Caesar and was replaced by a younger brother who co-ruled with Cleopatra as Ptolmey XIV. It was this other brother who went with Cleopatra to Rome. Cleopatra had him killed shortly after Caesar was assassinated.

Biography

Michael Klossner Michael Klossner
I was the right age to enjoy the children's swashbuckler series of the first decade of TV     Robin Hood, Zorro and half a dozen others. These have remained among my favorite TV nostalgia memories. The genre died on TV, as in the movies, but I am delighted that there have been three excellent, up-to-date sword series in the 1980s and 90s: Robin Of Sherwood, the Sharpe's series of TV films starring Sean Bean, and Xena.

Over 15 years, I wrote about a hundred reviews of nonfiction books on SF, horror and fantasy films and TV for the review journal of the Science Fiction Research Association, which changed title several times but was usually either Fantasy Review or SFRA Review. I recently quit this after getting fed up with both gushing, fannish "making of" books and jargon-filled academic studies. I have written chapters annotating the best books and magazines on genre films and TV in four books, all edited by Neil Barron: Fantasy Literature (1989), Horror Literature (1989), Anatomy Of Wonder 4 (1995, covering SF) and Fantasy And Horror Literature (publication expected late 1998).

Although a mere Yankee transplant, I work as a librarian at the Arkansas State Library. I contribute to Chakram, as "Boeotian".

Favorite episode: A NECESSARY EVIL (38/214)
Favorite line: Xena: "I don't like violence. I'm just very good at it".
First episode seen: CHARIOTS OF WAR (02/102)
Least favorite episode: THE BITTER SUITE (58/312)
