[30] PART X: GABBY'S FILK SONGBOOK

Tunes for those nights around the campfire

And to end with a flourish, we present a collection of filksongs from Gabby's Hit Parade:

(Adaptions by MMarilyn, Muse of MacGab Cultcha)

LEAVING ON AN ARGO
(to the tune of "Leaving on a Jet Plane")

All my gear is packed, I'm ready to go,
I'm standing here next to your bed roll
It's hard to wake you up so we can leave.
You know the dawn is breaking, it's early morn
And Argo's waitin', she's eaten her corn
And Gab I'm so anxious to be gone.

Chorus: We're leaving on an Argo,
Don't know where we'll end up today.
Leaving on an Argo,
And Gab, we best be on our way.

"Leaving on an Argo" was written by John Deutschenbard Jr and became popular when recorded by the singing trio Xena, Gab and Argo, otherwise known as XG&A.

[31] THE CHAKRAM GAME
(to the tune of Joni Mitchell's "Circle Game")

Yesterday a bard came out to wander,
Followed Xena all along the way.
Fearful of the warrior's latent anger,
And tearful when she said, "you cannot stay."

Chorus: And the chakram, it goes 'round and 'round
And the bard, she's walking up hill and down.
We're captive in the Xenaverse's time.
We could return - we could go back from where we came
But we're stuck, we're really stuck in the chakram game.
The months spin by, and now the bard is braver,
She's seen that Xena isn't all that bad.
And in fights, she hasn't had to waver,
But Xena's past still sometimes make her mad.

Repeat chorus twice.

[32] JOXER'S THEME
(to the tune of Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock")

I came upon a warrior and bard
They were walking along the road.
And I asked them "where are you going?"
And this they told me.
"We're goin' on down to that village there.
We're gonna kick a little 'warlord' butt.
We're gonna whamp him right in the n...(oops)
Gonna set those villagers free."

Chorus: We are warrior and bard, And we travel 'cross Greece.
And we really hope someday that this fighting will cease.
And can I travel with you?
NO !!!

Repeat chorus.

[33] STORMY WEATHER
(original lyrics by Ted Koehler)

Don't know why there's no sun up in the sky.
Stormy weather, since 'the Bard' and I ain't together
Keeps rainin' all the time.

My life is bare, gloom and misery everywhere.
Stormy weather, just can't get my poo' self together.
I'm weary all the time.

Since she went away, Ares walked in and met me.
If she stays away, ol' Tartarus 'ell get me.
All I do is pray some god(dess) is gonna let me.
Walk in the sun once more.

Can't go on, everything I've had is gone.
Stormy weather, since 'the Bard' and I ain't together
Keeps rainin' all the time.

[34] THE BARD THAT GOT AWAY
(rewritten by MMarilyn with all due respect to Ira Gershwin)

The night grows bitter, the stars have lost their glitter,
The wind grows colder and suddenly you're older
And it's all because of 'the Bard' that got away.
No more her eager call, the writing's on the scroll.
The dreams you've dreamed have all gone astray.

'The Bard' that won you, has run off and undone you.
That great beginning has seen a final inning.
Don't know what happened, it's all a crazy game!
No more that all time thrill 'cause you've been through
the mill And never a new love will be the same.

Good riddance! Good bye!
Every trick of hers you're on to.
But fools will be fools and where's she gone to?

The road gets rougher, it's lonelier and tougher
With hope you'll burn up, tomorrow she may turn up.
There's just no let up, the live long night and day.
Ever since this world began, there's nothing sadder than
A warrior woman looking for 'the Bard' that got away.

Music for both "Stormy Weather" and "The Bard That Got Away" by Harold Arlen.

[35] FIVE HUNDRED MILES (Across Greece)- traditional

If you miss the horse I'm on
You will know that I am gone.
You can hear Xena's yell a hundred miles.
A hundred miles, a hundred miles,
A hundred miles, a hundred miles.
You can hear Xena's yell a hundred miles.

A new 'shirt' on my back,
But not a dinar to my name.
Zeus, I can't go back home this a way.
This a way, this a way,
This a way, this a way.
Zeus, I can't go back home this away.

Zeus, I'm one, zeus, I'm two,
Zeus, I'm three, zeus, I'm four.
Zeus, I'm five hundred miles across Greece.
Five hundred miles, five hundred miles.
Five hundred miles, five hundred miles.
Zeus, I'm five hundred miles across Greece.

If you miss the horse I'm on,
You will know that I am gone.
You can hear Xena's yell a hundred miles.

[36] A LITTLE BITTY BARD (LET ME DOWN)
[See "Return of Callisto" for explanation]

A little bitty bard let me down,
Not doing her act as a clown.
I had it made up not to show a frown
But a little bitty bard let me down.
