Danielle Takes New York

[06] Arriving a few minutes late, and apparently by herself, Danielle Cormack walked through the side door of the Marriott Marquis ballroom which was hosting the second New York City HERC/XENA CONVENTION. Not looking up, she headed backstage. She was announced a few minutes later and was greeted with warm, though not overwhelming, applause. Audience members lucky enough to have seen her in Burbank said she seemed a lot less nervous. And as if to prove their point, Danielle came out armed with a camera and proceeded to take photos of the audience. She apologized for being late and explained that the combination of jet lag, little sleep and a few beers the night before were working against her. She immediately started answering questions. She was intelligent, charming and funny albeit a little subdued. Then, about 10 minutes into her time, she suddenly seemed to wake up. Signaled with a cheery "good morning", her energy level jumped several notches and what had preceded her "awakening" had been forgotten. I was really impressed with her easy, down to earth manner with the fans. She was very free with hugs and remarked on the various costumes some of her questioners wore. The questions, and her answers, could generally be broken down into several categories.

Ephiny

[07] Prior to playing Ephiny, Danielle had auditioned for several other roles on XENA. In fact, at the time of her initial audition, the role of Ephiny hadn't even been written. She approached this role as any other (because XENA isn't as big in New Zealand). Despite the fact she hasn't had the opportunity to watch an entire XENA episode (her busy schedule as wife and mother has precluded it), her favorite episode is HOOVES AND HARLOTS (10/110) because she had so much to do in it. If given a chance, she'd like to go back and redo her performance because she would do it so much better. Since her initial appearance HOOVES AND HARLOTS, Ephiny has become really nice. If possible Danielle would like Ephiny to get more "'tude". When asked about the character's current status on the show, she indicated Ephiny is the Queen of the Amazons. She also probably isn't thrilled with Xena for having broken her arm in THE BITTER SUITE (58/312). She doesn't know what would happen in any future encounter between the two characters (in fact Danielle isn't sure if Ephiny will be on the show at all in the future). Interestingly, Danielle wasn't happy with her performance in THE BITTER SUITE. Her most embarrassing moment on the show was giving birth [in IS THERE A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE (24/124)] to a jelly and cream cheese covered centaur baby. The Amazon retreat call ("coo-coo") was born when she was asked if she could make sounds. Her opinion? It's stupid. They made her do it. After some prompting, and very reluctantly, she did the call for a very appreciative audience.

XENA, The Show

[08] Nothing in her previous work experience had prepared her for working on XENA. The show has a whole new energy, quite unlike anything she's even done before. She finds the whole "fandom thing" that has resulted from her role overwhelming; she never thought it would reach this status.

Acting / Other Projects

[09] Danielle doesn't really have any acting "heroes" and she doesn't have any ideal role she'd like to take on. Instead she prefers working with people who are dedicated to their craft. Although it's a project that may never make it to American shores, she's about to do another film with Kevin Smith and Karl Urban. She enjoyed her role in HERCULES as the Chartreuse Fox. On the downside of acting, she finds the most disillusioning part trying to separate all her personalities. Another downside of the business is having to do things you would really prefer not to have to do. She indicated things in the Auckland acting community are a bit tough right now; that there isn't as much work in New Zealand as there is in Hollywood. Her work and fame as Ephiny have not resulted in Hollywood acting offers.

Life in General

[10] When not working Danielle hangs out with her 19 month old son, goes to the beach, listens to music and takes walks in the bush. This was not her first trip to New York and she was hoping to be able to do a little shopping while in the city.

[11] All too soon, her time was up. Taking a few more pictures of the audience, she departed to warmer applause then she was greeted with. Later, when Ted Raimi was on stage, Danielle came out again and hung out on the side of the stage. In the autograph line, she talked with fans. While autographing a Meow Mix poster she asked about the bar. Later that night she and about six friends stopped by the bar very briefly. To another fan she indicated she would like to redo her opening speech. She seemed to like my Ephiny badge.

[12] Overall, my impression is Danielle is very down to earth, very people oriented. Her comments regarding wanting to redo her performance in HOOVES AND HARLOTS, her dissatisfaction with her performance in THE BITTER SUITE and her wanting to redo her opening speech at the convention indicate to me that when it comes to her work Danielle has extremely high standards (read perfectionist).

[13] Here's hoping we're graced with her presence in the future.
