Michael arrives at Erica's office with a business proposition for Enchantment...Lena tries to strengthen her friendships with both Boyd and Bianca. Boyd and Bianca wonder if Lena sees either of them as a potential love interest.

From About All My Children
http://allmychildren.about.com/library/recaps/2003/bl20030227.htm

"The women of Fusion announced their arrival with energy and style," Erica reads aloud from the newspaper. Lena arrives, and Erica tells her she was just reading about the Fusion party. Ms. Condera tells her there was a good turnout, high profile guest list, lots of press, and she'd call her surveillance a success. "No one tagged you as a corporate spy?" Erica asks, and Lena tells her that some people can't see what's staring them in the face, although Kendall did question her presence. Erica asks if she caused a scene? Lena smiles that Mona Lisa smile as she says she contained the situation, "Although one guest did catch on to me." As Erica asks who, Bianca comes in the office and tells her, "Me." She and Lena smile at each other as Bianca tells her, "I outed your secret agent, Mom."...

Bianca tells her mother that she and Lena made a pretty good spy combo, with Boyd as her cover. Lena agrees that together they dug lots of dirt, and Erica tells them to start dishing! They tell her that Michael Cambias arrived fashionably late, and he spent the whole night velcroed to Kendall, ignoring major players like Palmer Cortlandt and Adam Chandler. Bianca thinks Kendall and Cambias are quite the item, but Lena says she did turn down his invitation to fly to Tuscany. Surprised, Bianca asks how she knew about that? Lena only says that she kept her ears open; last night the spotlight was very much on Fusion, and Mr. Cambias kept a low profile. Erica says she'd bet on it that Cambias is positioning himself for some kind of maneuver, "What I don't know yet is who is his target?" Val buzzes her, and Erica tells her assistant to send him in. "Speak of the devil," she tells her spy combo. Bianca looks on with interest as Erica and Michael greet each other warmly. Erica shows Bianca and Lena out...

Bianca asks Lena if she's looking for her mom, and Lena says she's curious about her progress with Mr. Cambias. Bianca tells her they're having lunch together at the Valley Inn, and admits she's curious about something, too, "How exactly did you know about Kendall turning down that invitation to Tuscany from Michael Cambias?" Lena says she overheard Simone talking about it, and Bianca wonders where she was? Lena tells her she was in the powder room, and Bianca agrees, "Maybe." When Lena asks if there's a problem, Bianca says no; she just can't imagine a scrounger like Kendall turning down a trip anywhere! Lena laughs with her, and Bianca tells her she'd better get going. "Where to?" Lena wonders, and Bianca tells her she's going to a trunk show at Lacey's, featuring a new designer; she's hoping for some inspiration for the youth line, or maybe just to pick something kicky up for when the weather gets warmer. Lena asks if she can tag along, "And then I'll take you out to dinner if you have no other plans." Bianca agrees that dinner sounds great. Boyd comes in and says he sees they survived last night's festivities. As for him, he woke up alone in his own bed, with no splitting headache, "I've had better times." Bianca says she's really sorry things didn't take off with Kendall, but Boyd knows she's not; she thinks he's better without her, and that he made a narrow escape! Bianca admits it, and he says, just for her information, he hasn't given up yet! Bianca tells him she's been there! She suggests that she and Lena meet in the lobby, and they can take her car. She leaves, and Lena turns to Boyd. She asks when he does give up on Kendall, if ever he does, would he be interested in having dinner with her? Boyd agrees Kendall's doing her own thing, so dinner sounds great; he'll call her. Lena agrees she'd like that, and she leaves. Boyd goes into Erica's office to leave a file on her desk, and Bianca comes back. She wants to ask him something, "Is Lena gay?" Boyd laughs as he says definitely no! Bianca wonders if he's sure, because she seems interested in her outside of work. Boyd tells her, "I hate to burst your bubble, gorgeous, but I'm pretty sure our Polish beauty hit on me just after you left!" Disappointed, Bianca thinks maybe she's undecided? Boyd proposes a friendly wager, "Say a spa day and dinner at the Valley Inn for whoever gets Lena first?" Bianca tells him he's on!

Previously on All My Children
Michael attempted to whisk Kendall away to Tuscany.
Erica sent Lena to the Fusion party to spy.
Smoan and Tad discussed Jake’s affair.
Edmund decided to let Mauria go.
Greenlee obsessed about her secret admirer...

Lena reveals to Erica that one guest at the Fusion party caught on that she was there to spy: Bianca. Who happens to come through the door. “I ‘outed’ your secret agent, Mom,” she says. Ohhhh, the implications of that statement. Not going there....

Lena and Bianca dish the party dirt. They report that Michael stayed glued to Kendall all night and that he ignored all the major business players that were in attendance. Lena says that Kendall turned Michael’s invitation to Tuscany down. Speak of the devil… Michael arrives at Enchantment...

Bianca asks Lena how she knew Kendall turned down Michael’s trip. Lena responds that she heard Smoan talking about it. Uh-huh. Sure. Bianca is headed off to Lacey’s where some minor fashion show is taking place. Lena asks if she minds a tag-along. And then she can take Bianca out to dinner. FYI: Lena’s body language is screaming ‘jump me!’ Bianca’s a little befuddled. I guess she’s not used to being hit on what with the straight woman karma she’s got going.

Boyd joins the Women of Questionable Sexuality. They ask him how he’s handling the morning after the party. He’s bummed that he woke up in his own bed, alone, with no splitting headache. He obviously would have loved to have woken up naked with Kendall at her condo surrounded by empty liquor bottles.

Sorry, I got distracted when I mentioned Boyd naked. The imagery… [bites knuckle]

Boyd knows Bianca believes that he made a narrow escape by striking out with Kendall again. “… yeah…” is Bianca’s response. Boyd tells Bianca that he still isn’t giving up on her sister. Bianca tells Lena to meet her in the lobby in fifteen minutes and then she departs. Lena purrs to Boyd that if and when he does give up on Kendall, then she’d be interested in going out with him...

Boyd agrees to dinner with Lena sometime and declares that he’ll call her. Lena goes along on her merry way and Boyd goes into Erica’s office to leave some forms on her desk. He runs into Bianca on the way out and she has a question for him. She wants his opinion on what he thinks Lena’s sexuality is since her gaydar sucks ass so much. He thinks Lena is straight. Bianca insists that Lena was hitting on her. Boyd says the same thing. “Well maybe she’s… undecided,” Bianca comments. Is that what the kids are calling it these days? Hey, AMC writers. The term is ‘bi’ okay? It’s all right to say it. Boyd proposes a wager. Whoever ‘gets Lena’ receives a spa day and dinner at the Valley Inn. Bianca is in.

COMMENTARY 1

From Kym Taborn
It's a Lenapalooza! This is by far one of the most fun Lena episodes ever. No collection is complete without this one! This is when their relationship was fun and there was enough flirting for all! Ah, the golden age of Lenaology.

The Player Being Played...Some More

Am I a bad person for enjoying watching Lena manipulate Erica?

"Ms. Kane, some people can't see what's staring them in the face."
Oooo, Lena, Lena, Lena. Not only were you pulling one over LaKane, but over the audience as well. One thing the show did well was the FEM [Fusion/Enchantment/Michael] twist where it was revealed months into the story that Lena was a mole for Michael. But nonetheless, when you look back at this time, the writers were laying the foreshadowing on thick. Of course, the canny viewer knew that Lena was up to no good, but her connection with Cambias, although foreshadowed several times, was pretty well kept hidden.

To Be Gay, Or Not To Be Gay, THAT Is The Question!

"I outed your secret agent, Mom."
The flirting begins ANEW, along with a new mystery: who is Lena really after, Boyd or Bianca, and as a result, is she gay or straight?

That FEM Magic

This is the episode where Michael pretends to meet Lena, but they have had a few ships passing in the dark moments up until now.

Bianca Is Intrigued, To Say The Least

Bianca implies that she was velcroed to Lena on the night of the party, dontchathink? She can't even remember taking a bathroom break! (Of course, I doubt Lena is telling the truth, but still, it was writing like this made the whole FEM story so fun).

Lena the smooth talker:

Bianca: I better get going.
Lena: Where to?
Bianca: Oh, to a trunk show at Lacey’s featuring a new designer.
Lena: The Owen Campbell collection.
Bianca: Yes, you know him.
Lena: I know of him. I know his ideas are tres avant-garde.
Bianca: Exactly, and I'm hoping for some inspiration for the youth line, or maybe just to pick something kicky up for when the weather gets warmer.
Lena: Mind if I tag along?
Bianca: Seriously?
Lena: Well, no, not seriously. We'll talk about the models and the clothes and the hair and the makeup, and then I’ll take you out to dinner, if you have no other plans.
Bianca: Dinner sounds great.
Bianca never had a chance, folks!

This is their second non-date. The velcroing at the Fusion party plus the off-screen nightcap afterwards is non-date number one.

Boyd and Bianca's Bet

This conversation is packed with a lot!

First, Lena is doing her spy job for Michael going after Boyd. The audience does not know this, but it really does look like Lena might be going for both (and the biggest irony of all is that Lena herself is going to eventually fall for Bianca and she herself does not even know it yet -- again, this FEM story line was quite a humdinger)! And Boyd seems to be happily picking up on the part where he's the target.

Second, the new "is she gay or isn't she" plot point begins in earnest. Boyd thinks Lena's not because she's hitting on him (obviously). However, Bianca is pretty open about it. She definitely first thinks gay or bi, "maybe she's undecided". Heh heh. Wishful thinking, eh Bianca?

Third, the wager. The wager is not that strange, but Boyd makes it, and it's a day at the spa????? Too many salmon shirts for you, young man!

Fourth, it is kind of twisted them making a bet who is going to bed Lena first. I guess it actually becomes who kisses her first, but the terminology "gets" is not that ambiguous.

"Previously on "All My Children""
Michael: You want to get to know me better, the best place for that is my villa in Tuscany.
Lena: Suppose I go to the Fusion party. I could find out Michael Cambias' angle for you.
Simone: Jake and Alison are having an affair. Your brother is a pig.
Edmund: I love you so much, I have to let you go.
Greenlee: "I'm afraid I’m forced to admire you from a distance"?

***** (clip b) [Lena discusses the Fusion party with Erica]

[Door opens]
Lena: Good morning, Ms. Kane.
Erica: Lena. Yes, come in. Close the door. I was just reading about the Fusion party.
Lena: Well, it was a good turnout, high-profile guest list, lots of press.
Erica: [amc030227b-inc starts] And your surveillance?
Lena: I'd call it a success.
Erica: No one tagged you as a corporate spy?
Lena: Ms. Kane, some people can't see what's staring them in the face. Although Kendall did question my presence.
Erica: Did she cause a scene?
Lena: I contained the situation. But one guest did catch on to me.
Erica: Who?
Bianca: Me. I outed your secret agent, Mom.

***** (clip c) Bianca joins the dishing about the Fusion party

Bianca: Lena and I made a pretty good spy combo.
Erica: Yes, that's right, you said you were at the party.
Bianca: Boyd was my cover.
Lena: Together we -- what's the expression? -- [amc030227c-inc starts] "Dug up lots of dirt."
Erica: Well, start dishing. Was Michael Cambias there?
Lena: He came fashionably late.
Bianca: And he stayed velcroed to Kendall the entire night.
Lena: Completely ignoring major players like Palmer Cortlandt and Adam Chandler.
Bianca: Yeah, and it seemed to me like Kendall and Cambias are quite the item.
Lena: Although she did turn down his invitation to fly to Tuscany.
Bianca: How did you know about that?
Lena: Hmm, I kept my ears open. Last night, the spotlight was very much on Fusion. Mr. Cambias kept a low profile.
Erica: Suspiciously low, I'm sure. Like a stealth bomber who remains invisible until it explodes.
Bianca: So you think that Cambias is positioning himself for some kind of maneuver?
Erica: Oh, honey, I would bet on it. What I don't know yet is, who is his target?
[Intercom buzzes]
Erica: Yes, Val? Really? Yes, yes, Val. By all means, send him in. Speak of the devil.
Michael: Erica.
Erica: Michael.

***** (clip d) Lena invites herself to a fashion show with Bianca

Bianca: Oh, Lena. Are you looking for Mom?
Lena: Just curious as to her progress with Mr. Cambias.
Bianca: Well, they're at lunch together at the Valley Inn.
Lena: Oh. I guess I'll catch up with her later then.
Bianca: [amc030227d-inc starts] Oh, um, Lena, before you go, I -- I'm kind of curious about something myself.
Lena: Yes?
Bianca: Well, I know I already asked you about this, but how exactly did you know about Kendall turning down that invitation to Tuscany from Michael Cambias?
Lena: I overheard one of Greenlee’s business associates -- what's her name? -- Simone. She was talking about it.
Bianca: And where was I?
Lena: In the powder room.
Bianca: Maybe.
Lena: Bianca, is there a problem?
Bianca: Oh, no. I guess I just can't imagine a scrounger like Kendall turning down a trip anywhere. Anyway, I better get going.

Boyd: Morning, ladies.
Bianca: Hey.
Boyd: I see you-all survived last night's festivities.
Bianca: How are you holding up?
Boyd: Oh, let's see, I woke up in my own bed, alone, and with no splitting headache. I've had better times.
Bianca: I'm really sorry that things didn't take off with Kendall.
Boyd: Oh, no, you're not. Admit it, you think I'm better off without her, that I made a narrow escape.
Bianca: Well -- yeah.
Boyd: Well, just for your information, I haven't given up yet.
Bianca: Well, I've been there. Anyway, Lena, why don't we meet in the lobby in about 15 minutes?
Lena: Ok.
Bianca: We can take my car.
[Bianca leaves]
Lena: Boyd? When you do give up on Kendall -- if ever you do -- would you be interested in dinner with me?

***** (clip e) Bianca and Boyd make a bet about which way Lena swings

Boyd: Well, Kendall’s doing her own thing, so sure, dinner sounds great. I'll call you.
Lena: I'd like that.
Boyd: Ok.
[Lena leaves]
Bianca: [amc030227e-inc starts] Hey.
Boyd: Hey.
Bianca: Um, can I ask your opinion about something?
Boyd: Sure. What's up?
Bianca: Do you -- do you think that maybe, possibly -- is Lena gay?
Boyd: Gay? Uh, no. Definitely no.
Bianca: No? Are you sure? Because I swear, she is interested in me, like, outside of work.
Boyd: Well, I hate to burst your bubble, gorgeous, but I'm pretty sure our polish beauty hit on me just after you left.
Bianca: Huh. Well, maybe she's undecided, hmm?
Boyd: Ok, well, how about a friendly wager? Say, a spa day and dinner at the Valley Inn for whoever gets Lena first?
Bianca: Hmm. Sure, you're on.
Boyd: Oh, it's on.
